Fact one

Your notes never leave your Mac. Not to our server, not to anyone. The notepad stores to a local database on your machine, and there's nowhere on our server for a note to go.

Fact two

The audio of your voice, recorded only while you hold the trigger key, goes to Roar's server, is transcribed, and is discarded. It is never stored.

The path

One dictation, step by step.

  1. You hold the trigger key. Roar notices that key and nothing else you type.

  2. Recording starts. Let go of the key and it stops. A single dictation can run up to ten minutes.

  3. The audio goes over an encrypted connection to Roar's server.

  4. The server hands it to a speech-to-text processor and deletes its own copy.

  5. The text comes back to your Mac and is typed where your cursor was. Roar keeps no copy of it.

What Roar reads, and what it keeps.

What Roar reads on your Mac

  • The trigger key you chose. Never any other key.
  • The name of the window you are in, to decide formatting. Never the contents of the window.
  • Your clipboard, only when an app does not accept direct typing, and only to paste and then restore what was there.
  • Nothing else. Roar does not read your screen, your files, your browsing, or your other apps.

What Roar keeps about you

  • Your account: email address and subscription state.
  • Your usage: minutes used, so the allowance works. Not the words themselves.
  • Your custom vocabulary list, so it can be applied to transcription.
  • Nothing about what you said.

Delete your account and everything above is deleted with it.

The limit

What Roar cannot do.

Roar can’t transcribe on your Mac. The models run on a server. If your work requires that audio never leave the machine, tell us before you subscribe and we will say plainly whether Roar fits.
